What is the Harrison Spinks Ruby 12500 Mattress?

The Harrison Spinks Ruby is a premium natural pocket sprung mattress designed for sleepers looking for sophisticated spring support, breathable natural fillings and a choice of mattress tensions.

The Ruby combines layers of natural fibres with 12,500 individually responsive springs, creating a supportive mattress without relying on thick layers of conventional foam for comfort.

Its spring system combines Cortec™ Quad pocket springs, HD 2500 Micro springs and Posturfil pocket springs. These different spring technologies work together at different levels within the mattress to respond to pressure, contour around the sleeper and provide a supportive sleeping surface.

The result is a luxurious natural mattress with responsive support and cushioning throughout its construction.

12,500 Springs for Responsive Support

The Harrison Spinks Ruby incorporates a total of 12,500 springs, combining three different Harrison Spinks spring technologies.

Cortec™ Quad Pocket Springs

Cortec™ Quad pocket springs form the supportive core of the Ruby mattress.

Each spring responds independently to pressure, allowing different areas of the mattress to adapt to the shape, weight and movement of the sleeper.

Independent spring movement also helps reduce the transfer of movement across the mattress compared with traditional interconnected spring systems, which can be particularly useful when sharing a bed.

HD 2500 Micro Springs

Layers of smaller HD 2500 Micro springs provide additional contouring and responsiveness closer to the sleeping surface.

These highly responsive springs compress independently as pressure is applied, allowing the mattress to adapt more precisely to the shape of the body while adding an additional layer of cushioning and support.

Posturfil Pocket Springs

The Ruby also incorporates Posturfil pocket springs, adding another responsive spring layer within the mattress.

These work alongside the Cortec™ Quad and HD Micro spring systems to provide additional contouring and support.

Together, these three spring technologies create the sophisticated 12,500-spring support system found within the Harrison Spinks Ruby.

Natural British Wool, Hemp, Flax and Cotton

The Ruby uses carefully selected natural fillings to provide comfort, breathability and resilience.

Its comfort layers include:

British Wool & Viscose

Naturally breathable wool helps regulate temperature and manage moisture while providing soft, resilient cushioning.

British Wool, Hemp & Flax

A blend of natural fibres provides additional comfort, breathability and resilience within the mattress.

Cotton, Hemp & Flax

Breathable plant-based fibres help create a fresher sleeping environment and play an important role in the Ruby's seasonal construction.

These natural materials work alongside the mattress's multiple spring layers to provide cushioning and comfort without surrounding the sleeper in thick layers of conventional foam.

Seasonal Turn – Warm Side / Cool Side

One of the defining features of the Harrison Spinks Ruby 12500 is its Seasonal Turn construction.

Rather than having two identical sleeping surfaces, the Ruby uses different natural materials close to each side of the mattress to create a surface suited to warmer or cooler conditions.

Warm Side – Winter

The winter side places a wool blend close to the sleeping surface.

Wool is naturally insulating while remaining breathable, making the Warm Side particularly suited to cooler nights and the autumn and winter months.

Cool Side – Summer

The summer side places a cotton blend close to the sleeping surface.

Cotton is naturally breathable and helps manage heat and moisture, creating a fresher sleeping environment during warmer weather.

Turn the mattress seasonally so the appropriate sleeping surface is uppermost.

Choose Your Mattress Tension

The Harrison Spinks Ruby 12500 is available in:

Soft – a more yielding sleeping surface for sleepers who prefer additional cushioning and contouring.

Medium – balances cushioning and support for those who prefer a mattress that feels neither particularly soft nor particularly firm.

Firm – provides a more supportive and less yielding sleeping surface for those who prefer a firmer mattress feel.

Mattress tension is a personal preference and shouldn't be selected purely according to sleeping position. Your body weight, build, current mattress and preferred sleeping feel should also be considered.

If you're unsure which Harrison Spinks mattress tension is right for you, contact our team for advice.

Split Tension Options

Selected sizes of the Harrison Spinks Ruby 12500 are available with split mattress tensions.

A split-tension mattress allows each side of the bed to have a different tension, making it particularly useful for couples who have different comfort preferences or body weights.

Depending on your selected size, available combinations can include:

  • Soft / Medium
  • Medium / Firm
  • Soft / Firm on selected Zip & Link configurations

Available tension combinations depend on mattress size, so please select your required size above to see the available options.

Chemical Treatment-Free Mattress Cover

The Ruby is finished with Harrison Spinks' in-house woven FR chemical treatment-free mattress cover.

This complements the mattress's natural construction while providing a comfortable and breathable sleeping surface.

The Ruby is finished with three rows of traditional side stitching, helping secure and support the mattress border while providing the premium handcrafted appearance associated with traditionally made mattresses.

Harrison Spinks Ruby vs Jade

The Harrison Spinks Ruby 12500 sits above the Harrison Spinks Jade 10000 within the Seasonal Turn collection.

Both mattresses combine natural fillings with Cortec™ Quad and HD 2500 Micro spring technology and feature Harrison Spinks' Warm Side / Cool Side Seasonal Turn construction.

The key difference is the spring system.

The Jade contains 10,000 springs, combining Cortec™ Quad and HD 2500 Micro springs.

The Ruby increases the total to 12,500 springs and adds Posturfil pocket springs, creating an additional responsive spring layer within the mattress.

The Ruby is also finished with three rows of side stitching, compared with two rows on the Jade.

If you like the natural fillings and Seasonal Turn construction of the Jade but want to move up to a more sophisticated spring system, the Ruby 12500 is the natural next step.

Pairing the Ruby with a Harrison Spinks Divan Base

The Harrison Spinks Ruby 12500 can be paired with a suitable bed frame or divan base.

For a complete Harrison Spinks sleep system, consider pairing the Ruby with a Harrison Spinks divan base.

A Padded Top divan base provides a stable and supportive foundation, while a True Edge pocket sprung divan base adds additional springing beneath the mattress for a more responsive overall feel.

Harrison Spinks divan bases are available separately in a range of styles, fabrics and configurations.

Customers Questions and Answers

Purchasing a new mattress isn't something we do every day, so when we decide to spend our hard earned cash it's very exciting and just like any new parcel that arrives, you'll want to open and use it straight away.

However, should you be sleeping on your brand new mattress right away?

Can you sleep on a new mattress straight away?

The simple answer is, no. Most mattress labels, especially a rolled mattress, it will state it's not supposed to be used within the first 24 hours, which as a rule is the recommended time you should wait after opening your brand new mattress - this is for good reason. After you've spent your hard earned cash on a sumptuous new bed, the last thing you would want to do is damage it, sleeping on it straight away could do just that.

Why wait to sleep on your new mattress?

Often, new mattresses will come rolled or compressed for delivery so it will need to expand to it's full usable size before you sleep on it. The process of the mattresses expanding to a useable size typically takes 24 hours but of course this can vary per manufacturer, some will take less time but some will take longer.

Before using your new mattress, check the specifications on the exact model you have purchased for the exact depth in inches. You can then measure the mattress to ensure it is suitable for sleeping on.

It is also advised to leave the sheets off your new mattress to help the mattress breath and 'air out', to ensure your new mattress recovers and any packaging smell can disperse.

Some mattress do indeed produce a smell whilst in the packaging, this is most commonly found with mattresses that contain memory foam or chemicals. To ensure these smell have left, it's recommended you leave the mattress to air out, however if you wanted to avoid mattress with fire retardant chemicals then head over to our Harrison Spinks range full of naturally fire retardant, chemical free beds.

Can I sleep on my pocket sprung mattress right away?

Not right away, but there's good news. If you have purchased a fully natural mattress that doesn't arrive vacuum packed and is naturally fire retardant, you'll only need to air your mattress for a few hours to allow the natural materials time to breath before fitting your sheets. However as mentioned above, if your mattress contains foam it's best to air your new purchase for a longer period of time. This means whatever material or type of mattress you buy, it should be aired properly before use.

How do I break in my new mattress?

Initially your new mattress might feel a little firm, but this is completely normal. The materials in your new mattress will need time to adjust to your body, to soften and stretch out in order to provide you the full support you require. It can take a couple of weeks for the mattress to settle, and you'll be required to take some steps to break in your new mattress.

First you'll need to let your mattress breath without any sheets fitted, laid down flat with a window slightly open to help the new mattress smell disperse.

Your existing bedframe/base will also need to be considered as your mattress will need to adjust and conform to the shape of this also. If your base is old and worn out if could negatively affect the mattresses performance. If possible, before making your purchase, you should think about whether your also need a new bedframe/base.

Once you've aired out your mattress, make sure you sleep on it every night for the first few weeks. It needs to be laid on often to help the fillings settle, this will also help both your mattress and your body adjust to one another. If your new mattress is for the spare room, please bear this in mind.

Conclusion

At the very least, your new mattress should be left to expand, reshape and air out after your delivery. If you really want to get the most comfort out of your mattress, prolong its life and have the best sleeping experience then this should be done for 24 hours before using.

This will cover all bases to ensure that whatever type of mattress you have bought has the best chance of being everything you had hoped for...and more! It's what you, and your new mattress deserve.
