What is the Harrison Spinks Emerald 16500 Mattress?

The Harrison Spinks Emerald is a premium natural pocket sprung mattress designed for customers looking for sophisticated spring technology, luxurious natural comfort and the flexibility of a Seasonal Turn mattress.

Unlike a turn-free mattress, the Emerald features two distinct sleeping surfaces.

Its Warm Side uses a wool-rich comfort layer for the colder months, while the Cool Side places a breathable cotton blend closer to the sleeping surface to help create a fresher feel during warmer weather.

Combined with Harrison Spinks' advanced spring technology, the Emerald delivers responsive support, excellent lumbar comfort and naturally regulated temperature throughout the year.

16,500 Springs for Advanced Responsive Support

The Harrison Spinks Emerald incorporates an impressive 16,500 individually responsive springs, combining several innovative Harrison Spinks spring technologies.

Cortec™ Quad Pocket Springs

The Cortec™ Quad pocket spring system forms the supportive core of the mattress.

Each spring responds independently to body weight and movement, adapting naturally to the sleeper while helping minimise partner disturbance.

Cortec™ springs are also glue free, supporting Harrison Spinks' commitment to more sustainable mattress manufacturing.

HD 2000 Micro Springs

A layer of HD 2000 Micro springs provides responsive contouring closer to the sleeping surface.

These highly responsive springs react individually to pressure, improving comfort and helping distribute body weight more evenly.

Dual Layers of HD 2500 Micro Springs

The Emerald also features dual layers of HD 2500 Micro springs.

These additional micro spring layers provide even greater contouring, helping the mattress adapt precisely to body shape while enhancing pressure relief and comfort.

Posturfil Pocket Springs

A layer of Posturfil pocket springs adds another responsive support system within the mattress.

Working alongside the Cortec™ Quad and HD Micro springs, Posturfil springs contribute to the Emerald's sophisticated multi-layer support system.

Together these innovative spring technologies create the advanced 16,500-spring construction that defines the Harrison Spinks Emerald.

Natural British Comfort Fillings

The Emerald combines advanced spring technology with carefully selected natural upholstery.

British Wool & Viscose

Naturally breathable British wool helps regulate temperature while managing moisture throughout the night.

Blended with viscose, it creates soft yet resilient comfort close to the sleeping surface.

British Wool, Hemp & Flax

This natural fibre blend provides excellent breathability, resilience and long-lasting comfort.

Cotton, Hemp & Flax

Natural cotton encourages airflow while hemp and flax help wick moisture away from the body, creating a cooler sleeping environment.

Together these natural fillings create luxurious comfort without relying on thick conventional foam comfort layers.

Seasonal Turn – Warm Side / Cool Side

The Harrison Spinks Emerald is a Seasonal Turn mattress, offering two different sleeping surfaces to suit changing temperatures throughout the year.

Warm Side – Winter

The winter side places a British wool blend close to the sleeping surface.

Wool naturally insulates while remaining breathable, helping create a warm and comfortable sleeping environment during the colder months.

Cool Side – Summer

The summer side positions a cotton blend nearer the sleeping surface.

Cotton naturally improves airflow and helps manage heat and moisture, providing a fresher sleeping surface during warmer weather.

Turning the mattress seasonally allows you to enjoy the benefits of each sleeping surface throughout the year.

Choose Your Mattress Tension

The Harrison Spinks Emerald 16500 is available in:

Soft – enhanced cushioning and contouring.

Medium – balances cushioning with responsive support.

Firm – provides a firmer, more supportive sleeping surface.

Selected sizes are also available with split tension options, allowing couples to choose different comfort levels on each side of the mattress.

Chemical Treatment-Free Mattress Cover

The Emerald is finished with Harrison Spinks' in-house woven FR chemical treatment-free mattress cover.

The naturally wool-rich cover complements the breathable comfort layers while avoiding additional chemical fire-retardant treatments.

Traditional three rows of side stitching reinforce the mattress border, improving durability, edge support and maintaining the handcrafted finish.

Handcrafted in Yorkshire

Every Harrison Spinks Emerald mattress is handcrafted in Yorkshire using responsibly sourced natural materials and Harrison Spinks' award-winning spring technology.

Harrison Spinks grows many of its own natural comfort fillings, manufactures its own springs and weaves its own fabrics in-house, ensuring exceptional quality and sustainability throughout the manufacturing process.

Why Choose the Harrison Spinks Emerald?

The Emerald is ideal for customers looking for:

  • A premium British-made luxury mattress

  • Cortec™ Quad, Posturfil and HD Micro spring technology
  • Warm Side / Cool Side Seasonal Turn comfort
  • Naturally breathable British wool, cotton, hemp and flax

Emerald vs Sapphire

The Harrison Spinks Emerald 16500 sits between the Ruby 12500 and the Sapphire 20000 within the Harrison Spinks Seasonal Turn collection.

Compared with the Ruby, the Emerald increases the spring count from 12,500 to 16,500 springs, introducing dual layers of HD 2500 Micro springs for even greater contouring and pressure relief.

The Sapphire 20000 builds on the Emerald by increasing the overall spring count further and introducing British wool and mohair into its luxury comfort fillings.

For customers looking for a significant step up from the Ruby without moving to the very top of the Seasonal Turn collection, the Emerald offers an outstanding balance of sophisticated spring technology, luxurious natural materials and year-round comfort.

Pair with a Harrison Spinks Divan Base

The Harrison Spinks Emerald can be paired with a suitable bed frame or divan base.

For the complete Harrison Spinks sleep system, consider pairing the Emerald with a Harrison Spinks True Edge pocket sprung divan base, allowing the mattress's advanced spring system to perform at its best.

Harrison Spinks divan bases are available separately in a wide range of fabrics, storage options and styles.

How to Care for Your Emerald Mattress

As a Seasonal Turn mattress, the Emerald should be rotated regularly and turned twice a year.

Using the Warm Side during autumn and winter and the Cool Side during spring and summer helps maintain the mattress while allowing you to enjoy the different natural comfort layers throughout the year.

Following the recommended care routine will help maximise both comfort and longevity.

Customers Questions and Answers

Purchasing a new mattress isn't something we do every day, so when we decide to spend our hard earned cash it's very exciting and just like any new parcel that arrives, you'll want to open and use it straight away.

However, should you be sleeping on your brand new mattress right away?

Can you sleep on a new mattress straight away?

The simple answer is, no. Most mattress labels, especially a rolled mattress, it will state it's not supposed to be used within the first 24 hours, which as a rule is the recommended time you should wait after opening your brand new mattress - this is for good reason. After you've spent your hard earned cash on a sumptuous new bed, the last thing you would want to do is damage it, sleeping on it straight away could do just that.

Why wait to sleep on your new mattress?

Often, new mattresses will come rolled or compressed for delivery so it will need to expand to it's full usable size before you sleep on it. The process of the mattresses expanding to a useable size typically takes 24 hours but of course this can vary per manufacturer, some will take less time but some will take longer.

Before using your new mattress, check the specifications on the exact model you have purchased for the exact depth in inches. You can then measure the mattress to ensure it is suitable for sleeping on.

It is also advised to leave the sheets off your new mattress to help the mattress breath and 'air out', to ensure your new mattress recovers and any packaging smell can disperse.

Some mattress do indeed produce a smell whilst in the packaging, this is most commonly found with mattresses that contain memory foam or chemicals. To ensure these smell have left, it's recommended you leave the mattress to air out, however if you wanted to avoid mattress with fire retardant chemicals then head over to our Harrison Spinks range full of naturally fire retardant, chemical free beds.

Can I sleep on my pocket sprung mattress right away?

Not right away, but there's good news. If you have purchased a fully natural mattress that doesn't arrive vacuum packed and is naturally fire retardant, you'll only need to air your mattress for a few hours to allow the natural materials time to breath before fitting your sheets. However as mentioned above, if your mattress contains foam it's best to air your new purchase for a longer period of time. This means whatever material or type of mattress you buy, it should be aired properly before use.

How do I break in my new mattress?

Initially your new mattress might feel a little firm, but this is completely normal. The materials in your new mattress will need time to adjust to your body, to soften and stretch out in order to provide you the full support you require. It can take a couple of weeks for the mattress to settle, and you'll be required to take some steps to break in your new mattress.

First you'll need to let your mattress breath without any sheets fitted, laid down flat with a window slightly open to help the new mattress smell disperse.

Your existing bedframe/base will also need to be considered as your mattress will need to adjust and conform to the shape of this also. If your base is old and worn out if could negatively affect the mattresses performance. If possible, before making your purchase, you should think about whether your also need a new bedframe/base.

Once you've aired out your mattress, make sure you sleep on it every night for the first few weeks. It needs to be laid on often to help the fillings settle, this will also help both your mattress and your body adjust to one another. If your new mattress is for the spare room, please bear this in mind.

Conclusion

At the very least, your new mattress should be left to expand, reshape and air out after your delivery. If you really want to get the most comfort out of your mattress, prolong its life and have the best sleeping experience then this should be done for 24 hours before using.

This will cover all bases to ensure that whatever type of mattress you have bought has the best chance of being everything you had hoped for...and more! It's what you, and your new mattress deserve.
