What is a Harrison Spinks Slim Divan Base?

A slim divan is designed for customers who prefer the appearance of a traditional bed frame but want the supportive properties of a divan.

Unlike a conventional deep divan, the Harrison Spinks Slim Base uses a much shallower upholstered base positioned on taller legs. This creates visible space beneath the bed and gives the finished bed a stylish, furniture-like appearance.

Despite its slim profile, the base is designed to provide a supportive foundation for your mattress.

The overall height of the Harrison Spinks Slim Divan Base is approximately 29cm including the legs, making it easy to combine with a Harrison Spinks mattress to create an elegant complete bed.

Choose Your Base Type

Padded Top Slim Divan Base

The Padded Top Slim Base provides a supportive, stable platform beneath your mattress.

This is the firmer and simpler of the available base constructions and is a good choice if you want the mattress itself to provide the majority of the cushioning and suspension.

A padded-top divan can also provide a slightly firmer overall feel than a pocket-sprung base.

True Edge 1000 Pocket Sprung Slim Divan Base

For additional comfort and responsiveness, choose the Harrison Spinks True Edge 1000 Slim Base.

This version incorporates 1000 pocket springs within the divan base. The springs respond independently to pressure, allowing the base to work alongside your mattress rather than simply acting as a solid platform.

Harrison Spinks' True Edge technology reinforces the perimeter surrounding the pocket springs. This helps reduce the softer, collapsing sensation that can occur around the edge of some traditionally sprung divans.

The result is improved support towards the sides of the bed, helping maximise the usable sleeping surface while also making it easier to sit on or get out of the edge of the bed.

Harrison Spinks recommends a True Edge pocket-sprung divan base for optimum comfort and support.

Slim Divan Base Sizes

The Harrison Spinks Slim Divan Base is available in a range of standard UK bed sizes:

Single: 3'0" / 90cm
Small Double: 4'0" / 120cm
Double: 4'6" / 135cm
King Size: 5'0" / 150cm
Super King: 6'0" / 180cm

All Harrison Spinks Slim Bases use an east-to-west split, regardless of size.

Please select your required size and available configuration from the options above.

Dimensions

Overall base height including legs: approximately 29cm / 290mm

The Slim Divan's combination of a shallow upholstered base and tall legs creates a more open appearance than a conventional deep divan.

Please remember that your chosen mattress will add to the overall finished bed height.

Upholstery and Leg Options

Personalise your Harrison Spinks Slim Divan Base with a choice of luxurious upholstery fabrics and coordinating leg options.

The combination of a slim upholstered base and exposed wooden legs makes this divan particularly well suited to contemporary bedrooms where the appearance of a traditional deep divan may feel too substantial.

Choose a fabric to complement your bedroom décor and coordinate your base with a Harrison Spinks headboard to create a complete upholstered bed.

Which Harrison Spinks Base Should I Choose?

Choose the Slim Divan Base if you want:

  • A contemporary alternative to a traditional deep divan
  • The appearance of a bedstead or bed frame
  • Visible legs and more open space beneath the bed
  • A supportive foundation designed for a premium mattress
  • The option of a pocket-sprung True Edge base
  • Harrison Spinks fabrics and coordinated bedroom styling

If storage is more important, consider a Harrison Spinks Deep, Shallow or Ottoman Divan Base instead.

Padded Top vs True Edge – What's the Difference?

Padded Top:
Provides a stable and supportive platform with a slightly firmer overall feel. It's an excellent choice if you want the mattress to provide most of the cushioning and suspension.

True Edge 1000:
Contains 1000 pocket springs to provide additional responsiveness and cushioning beneath the mattress. Reinforced True Edge construction also provides enhanced support around the perimeter of the bed.

For customers investing in a premium Harrison Spinks mattress and looking for the complete sprung-bed experience, the True Edge option offers the more luxurious base construction.

Why Pair a Harrison Spinks Mattress with a Harrison Spinks Divan Base?

A mattress and divan work together as a complete sleep system.

While Harrison Spinks mattresses can be used with suitable alternative bed frames and bases, pairing your mattress with a Harrison Spinks divan allows you to choose a foundation specifically designed to complement the mattress.

The True Edge pocket-sprung version adds an additional responsive layer beneath your mattress, while the reinforced perimeter helps provide consistent support across more of the sleeping surface.

Headboard Compatibility

Harrison Spinks recommends pairing its Slim Divan Base with a deep headboard.

A matching upholstered Harrison Spinks headboard can create a coordinated complete-bed appearance, with your chosen fabric continuing across both the base and headboard.

Please note that the headboard and mattress are not included with this product unless specifically stated otherwise.

Harrison Spinks Slim Divan Base FAQs

How high is the Harrison Spinks Slim Divan Base?

The overall height is approximately 29cm (290mm), including the legs. Your mattress will sit on top of this, so remember to add the depth of your chosen mattress when calculating the finished bed height.

Does the Harrison Spinks Slim Base include a mattress?

No. This product is for the divan base only. Mattresses are available separately.

Does it include a headboard?

No. A headboard is not included unless specifically stated. Harrison Spinks recommends pairing the Slim Base with a deep headboard.

What is the difference between the Padded Top and True Edge Slim Base?

The Padded Top provides a stable, firmer foundation beneath the mattress. The True Edge version contains 1000 pocket springs, providing additional cushioning and responsiveness, together with reinforced edge support.

What is Harrison Spinks True Edge technology?

True Edge is Harrison Spinks' reinforced pocket-sprung base construction. The perimeter surrounding the pocket springs is reinforced to reduce excessive give around the edge of the divan. This provides better support towards the edge and helps maximise the usable sleeping surface.

Is the Harrison Spinks Slim Base sprung?

It depends on the version you select. The standard Padded Top version is not pocket sprung. The True Edge 1000 version contains 1000 pocket springs within the base.

Is the Slim Base lower than a normal divan?

The upholstered section has a much slimmer appearance than a conventional deep divan. Tall legs raise the base from the floor, giving it the appearance of a contemporary bedstead while maintaining an overall base height of approximately 29cm.

Which sizes are available?

Harrison Spinks lists its Slim Base in Single (90cm), Small Double (120cm), Double (135cm), King (150cm) and Super King (180cm) sizes.

Customers Questions and Answers

Purchasing a new mattress isn't something we do every day, so when we decide to spend our hard earned cash it's very exciting and just like any new parcel that arrives, you'll want to open and use it straight away.

However, should you be sleeping on your brand new mattress right away?

Can you sleep on a new mattress straight away?

The simple answer is, no. Most mattress labels, especially a rolled mattress, it will state it's not supposed to be used within the first 24 hours, which as a rule is the recommended time you should wait after opening your brand new mattress - this is for good reason. After you've spent your hard earned cash on a sumptuous new bed, the last thing you would want to do is damage it, sleeping on it straight away could do just that.

Why wait to sleep on your new mattress?

Often, new mattresses will come rolled or compressed for delivery so it will need to expand to it's full usable size before you sleep on it. The process of the mattresses expanding to a useable size typically takes 24 hours but of course this can vary per manufacturer, some will take less time but some will take longer.

Before using your new mattress, check the specifications on the exact model you have purchased for the exact depth in inches. You can then measure the mattress to ensure it is suitable for sleeping on.

It is also advised to leave the sheets off your new mattress to help the mattress breath and 'air out', to ensure your new mattress recovers and any packaging smell can disperse.

Some mattress do indeed produce a smell whilst in the packaging, this is most commonly found with mattresses that contain memory foam or chemicals. To ensure these smell have left, it's recommended you leave the mattress to air out, however if you wanted to avoid mattress with fire retardant chemicals then head over to our Harrison Spinks range full of naturally fire retardant, chemical free beds.

Can I sleep on my pocket sprung mattress right away?

Not right away, but there's good news. If you have purchased a fully natural mattress that doesn't arrive vacuum packed and is naturally fire retardant, you'll only need to air your mattress for a few hours to allow the natural materials time to breath before fitting your sheets. However as mentioned above, if your mattress contains foam it's best to air your new purchase for a longer period of time. This means whatever material or type of mattress you buy, it should be aired properly before use.

How do I break in my new mattress?

Initially your new mattress might feel a little firm, but this is completely normal. The materials in your new mattress will need time to adjust to your body, to soften and stretch out in order to provide you the full support you require. It can take a couple of weeks for the mattress to settle, and you'll be required to take some steps to break in your new mattress.

First you'll need to let your mattress breath without any sheets fitted, laid down flat with a window slightly open to help the new mattress smell disperse.

Your existing bedframe/base will also need to be considered as your mattress will need to adjust and conform to the shape of this also. If your base is old and worn out if could negatively affect the mattresses performance. If possible, before making your purchase, you should think about whether your also need a new bedframe/base.

Once you've aired out your mattress, make sure you sleep on it every night for the first few weeks. It needs to be laid on often to help the fillings settle, this will also help both your mattress and your body adjust to one another. If your new mattress is for the spare room, please bear this in mind.

Conclusion

At the very least, your new mattress should be left to expand, reshape and air out after your delivery. If you really want to get the most comfort out of your mattress, prolong its life and have the best sleeping experience then this should be done for 24 hours before using.

This will cover all bases to ensure that whatever type of mattress you have bought has the best chance of being everything you had hoped for...and more! It's what you, and your new mattress deserve.
